Searching and Tags
Adding Tags
Every note can have any number of tags. To add a tag to a note you can:
- Type the tag into the Tags field, then press Return.
- Drag a tag from the Tags drawer to the Tags field. (Open the tags drawer from the toolbar.)
- Drag a tag from the Tags drawer on top of a note in the Notes drawer. (Drag the tag without highlighting it, otherwise you'll only see the notes that already have the tag.)
You can create a new tag in the Tags drawer by clicking the + button. You can then drag the new tag to a note. However if no note has that tag when the AutoNotes window is closed, then it will disappear.
Adding and Removing Tags with Multiple Notes
Underneath the Notes Drawer is a tags field that shows all the tags that are common to all the selected notes. You can select multiple notes by either holding down the Command key and clicking, or holding down the shift key to select a range.

If you add a tag to the common tags field it will add the tag to all the selected notes. If you remove a tag from the common tags field it will remove it from all the selected notes. You can add tags by dragging it from the Tags drawer, or by typing it in and pressing Return
Merging Tags
If you drag a tag in the Tags drawer on top of another tag, then it will add that tag to all the documents already with the other tag. You could then delete the original tag (by clicking the "-" button), and you will have effectively merged the two tags.
Deleting Tags
Clicking the "-" minus button in the Tags drawer will remove that tag from all notes.
Renaming Tags
Single click on the tag in the tags drawer and it will become editable. Type in a new name and all notes with that tag will have the tag name changed.
Searching with Tags
If you open the Notes drawer by clicking Notes in the toolbar, by default it will show all the notes you have in your repository.
If you have both the Tags and Notes drawers open at the same time, then the Notes drawer will only show the notes that have the selected tags.
Depending on whether you have AND or OR selected at the bottom of the Tags drawer, it will show either the notes with all the selected tags, or with any of the selected tags.
You can select multiple tags by holding down the shift key and clicking to select a range of tags, or by holding down the Command key and clicking to select individual tags.
Textual Search
If you have entered text in the search field in the toolbar, then the Notes drawer will only show notes that contain that text in the title or or text of the note. Notes with the text in the title are shown first. Similar to iTunes, each word in the search field is considered separately and effectively "anded" together.
If you have tags selected in the Tags drawer as well as search text in the search field, then both criteria are also "anded" together. Close the Tags drawer, or else unselect all tags to remove tags as a criteria.
